To describe what we do, let me give you a few examples.We developed a website that allows people to post tutorials to our site through their sites RSS feed (a automatically updating file that gives information about the posts most recently made to their site). The simply enter an RSS feed into our site and we do the rest. The entire process has been automated. We gather all the information from the feed, post the information to our site, and make it available.
Another example of this is a site that has multiple sources of information. These sources are all other sites. When a site submits information to the site, we automatically go out and take a "snapshot" of their website to use as a thumbnail. This would have to be done by a person for each new site. They would have to go and take a screenshot, save it to a properly named file, and also resize it to the proper size. This has all been automated to prevent the wasted man-hours on tasks that can be achieved automatically.
A large area that we specialize in automation is collecting of data. This is traditionally known as "scraping".
